Monday, August 18th
12:00 PM ET – 3:15 PM ET
Overview:
This three-hour introductory Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT; Johnson, 2004) workshop offers the essentials: underpinnings of attachment science, the significance of and biology of emotion, and how EFT provides a foundational roadmap for healing through emotional connection. This training will provide an outline of EFT with an emphasis on adult attachment, emotion, and how love requires interdependence.Â
Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy is an excellent approach to helping couples shift their distressing interactional patterns into patterns of connection and emotional bonding. Based on Bowlby’s Adult Attachment Theory and prioritizing the role of emotion, EFT is an experiential, humanistic, empirically-validated model developed by the late Dr. Sue Johnson.Â
In this presentation, you’ll learn EFT Stages 1 + 2 including the typical patterns of distress for couples, the EFT Tango (the 5 macro-interventions) and the other EFT Interventions used to distill and deepen the clients’ emotion. We’ll review the steps of Stage 1 in order to describe the process of containing and then interrupting the couple’s negative patterns. Highlighted in Stage 2, you’ll learn the steps of how to create a positive pattern of interaction between the partners. We will also review the Experience Scale (Klein, Mathieu, Keisler & Gendlin, 1969) in order to increase our attunement and to track depth of client emotional experiencing. For year now, our field has known that client depth of emotional experience facilitates successful treatment outcomes!
Objectives:
- Summarize the EFT perspective — experiential, growth oriented.Â
- Describe the key tenets of attachment theory.
- Describe the goals and stages of EFT.
- Define the moves of the EFT Tango.
- Outline the core EFT interventions and their function to deepen intrapsychic work or reflect the interpersonal process at play.
- Specify the strengths of attachment theory and science as a map to a clear understanding of client problems and strengths, guiding every session.
- Utilize the Experience Scale to track depth of client emotional experiencing, which facilitates positive treatment outcomes.
Course materials are only available to enrolled students.
