Racial-Based Trauma is categorized as the mental and emotional injury caused by encounters with racial bias, discrimination, racism, or hate crimes experienced by Black, Indigenous, or People of Color.
This trauma can affect numerous areas of a person’s life, including their ability to build relationships, develop trust, and feel safe.
A clinician’s understanding of this phenomenon can promote deeper rapport in the therapeutic relationship and create an alliance to start the process towards healing.
