COURSE OVERVIEW

Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) understands and considers the pervasive nature of trauma and promotes environments of healing and recovery. Trauma-informed care calls for a change in organizational culture, placing an emphasis on understanding and responding to the effects of trauma. How might our workplace be re-traumatizing? How can we work to reduce the likely hood of re-traumatization of our clients? TIC requires a system to make a paradigm shift from asking, “What is wrong with this person?” to “What has happened to this person?”.

Stephen Mathis is a licensed psychologist and an internationally certified addictions counselor who has been working with adolescents, young and middle adults, and families/couples since 1983. He is one of the few clinicians who works on weekends and makes house calls. In addition to providing a variety of assessments (i.e., psychoeducational, forensic, cognitive, emotional, neurological, personological), individual psychotherapy (both “regularly scheduled” and intensive outpatient), and group therapy, Dr. Mathis is an adjunct/part-time faculty at several colleges and training institutes, conducts seminars and workshops nationwide on a variety of topics, supervises other therapists, consults with various professionals and organizations, has pioneered a new form of music-assisted therapy (M.A.TH.I.S.), and is in the process of writing a book on addictions based on his development trauma model. True to the advice given to the patients he serves, Dr. Mathis adheres to a healthy lifestyle, an illicit substance-free existence, and a holistic dietary regimen, making the majority of his meals from scratch himself without using refined or artificial ingredients or simple carbohydrates. In his free time, Dr. Mathis is an avid collector of classic stringed instruments and amplifiers, as well as a being a multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter, arranger, and producer.
