Overview:
While Complex Borderline Personality Disorder (C-BPD) is not a formal diagnosis recognized by the DSM-5-TR or ICD-10, this course uses the term as a conceptual framework to explore the challenges of treating individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder who present with significant comorbidities and elevated clinical complexity.
Led by Dr. Daniel Fox, this training provides clinicians with a structured approach to understanding and addressing both the surface-level behaviors and deeper core dynamics often observed in clients with BPD. The course highlights how co-occurring conditions such as bipolar disorder, PTSD, ADHD, dissociative identity disorder, psychosis, and major depression can complicate assessment, intensify symptom presentation, and hinder therapeutic progress.
Participants will learn to apply evidence-based strategies for managing self-harm and suicidality, identifying patterns that reinforce dysfunction, and tailoring interventions using recognized psychological models and clinical insights. The content is grounded in peer-reviewed literature and designed to support psychologists working with complex BPD presentations.
Objectives:
- Identify two elements of borderline personality disorder that contribute to its expression
- Describe two common comorbid conditions that can thwart progress in treatment for those with C-BPD.
- Explain how overlapping symptomatology between BPD and other disorders may impact clinical assessment and intervention strategies.
Disclaimer:
The term “Complex Borderline Personality Disorder” is not a formal diagnosis recognized by the DSM-5-TR and ICD-10. This course discusses the construct as a clinical framework to understand and manage cases with high symptom complexity and comorbidity. Participants should use clinical discretion and consider additional diagnostic consultation and training when applying concepts in practice.
Scope and Limitations Disclosure:
The concept of C-BPD remains a subject of clinical debate, with some professionals proposing overlapping frameworks such as Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) to explain similar symptom presentations. While emerging literature explores distinctions between BPD, “Complex Borderline Personality Disorder”, and C-PTSD, there is a lack of consensus on diagnostic criteria, assessment tools, and treatment approaches. As such, this presentation acknowledges existing research gaps and invites participants to critically evaluate the evolving discourse while integrating evidence-informed practices into clinical work.
