Overview:
Trauma and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can have a deeply disruptive impact on an individual’s life and well-being, and can also be challenging to treat from a clinician’s perspective.
Fortunately, evidence-based therapeutic techniques have been developed to treat PTSD effectively in most cases, often vastly improving quality of life within three- to six-month treatment periods.
Drawing from his years of training in Veterans Administration hospitals, Dr. Weiner presents a model for understanding and treating trauma from a cognitive-behavioral perspective, with a focus on Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT).
Objectives:
Explain at least two of the best practice assessment techniques for trauma.
Discuss the cognitive theory of trauma and how it is used to reduce trauma-related symptoms.
Discuss at least two strategies and interventions related to Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD.
Scope and Limitations
This course provides an overview of Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for treating PTSD, with a focus on evidence-based assessment and intervention strategies. It is intended for licensed mental health professionals with foundational training in trauma treatment and cognitive-behavioral approaches. The course does not provide certification in CPT and is not a substitute for formal supervision or comprehensive CPT training. All concepts should be applied within the clinician’s scope of practice.
