Overview:
The internet offers a tremendous variety of instant-access sexually explicit material. An overwhelming majority of males have seen pornography and view it regularly. Though most porn users experience no problems, many struggle with feelings of guilt and shame about their use of porn, and some encounter challenges within their relationships or at work related to pornography. Most online porn is free, but comes with substantial risks, ranging from exposure to legal charges to supporting the exploitation of vulnerable persons.
Dr. David Ley is a worldwide expert on the problems people experience related to pornography. In this training, Dr. Ley helps attendees understand what research tells us about people who report struggles with control of their porn use, as well as applying skills of negotiation, behavior, self-management, coping skills and sexual education to assist couples in understanding and resolving porn-related conflict. Clinicians will benefit by learning strategies and skills to assist patients in increasing self-control and preventing potential harms or relationship conflicts related to pornography use.
Objectives:
- Conduct thorough assessments to evaluate the impact of porn use on sexual satisfaction within relationships, and on anxiety and emotional distress related to moral incongruence.
- Guide clients in identifying sexual values and conflicts related to porn use.
- Discuss coping strategies for managing emotions and reducing reliance on porn.
- Facilitate communication and negotiation skills in couples addressing porn use.
- Integrate harm reduction principles into treatment planning for porn-related concerns.
