Overview:
Social media use is a central part of modern life, yet it presents significant risks for mental health and well-being across the lifespan. Vulnerable populations—including children, adolescents, older adults, and individuals with lifelong disabilities—are particularly at risk for negative online experiences such as predation, exploitation, harassment, and cyberbullying. These experiences can contribute to heightened psychological distress, impaired functioning, and long-term safety concerns.
In this presentation, Christina Marsack-Topolewski will help participants examine the prevalence, predictors, and consequences of adverse social media experiences and highlights strategies to promote safer online engagement. Participants will learn to identify risk factors, recognize populations most susceptible to online harms, and implement evidence-informed approaches to support individuals and families in navigating social media safely. Practical tools and resources will be provided to help clinicians address online safety within therapeutic practice while fostering resilience and positive mental health outcomes. Assessment tools, practical strategies, and resources will be provided.
Objectives:
- Identify the potential benefits and safety risks of social media use across age groups.
- Describe the mental health and wellness concerns associated with online exploitation, harassment, and cyberbullying.
- Recognize vulnerable populations at greater risk for adverse social media experiences, including children, adolescents, older adults, and individuals with disabilities.
- Apply strategies and resources to support clients and families in preventing, mitigating, and addressing online safety challenges.
