Overview:
Disruptive behaviors interfere with children’s and family functioning and predict disruptive behavior and internalizing symptoms in adulthood. This course will provide an overview of disruptive behavior disorders in youth, including Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder.
Participants will review diagnostic features, maintaining factors, and common comorbidities. Participants will learn effective structured treatments for children based on individual interventions, including problem-solving skills therapy to address negative behaviors and cognitive behavioral therapy to address maladaptive cognitions, emotional dysregulation, and negative behaviors.
Participants will also learn about coercive interaction patterns and parent-based training to modify disruptive behavior. Clinical examples and behavioral role plays will be used to help illustrate and practice effective implementation.
Objectives:
- Identify at least two (2) common cognitive distortions in children with disruptive behavior disorders.
Apply at least two (2) individual CBT strategies to help reduce children’s disruptive behavior.
Develop effective reinforcement systems for families of children with disruptive behaviors.
Scope and Limitations Disclosure
This continuing education training provides an overview of disruptive behavior disorders in youth, including Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder, and introduces evidence-informed conceptual frameworks and clinical strategies for addressing disruptive behaviors. This training is intended to enhance participants’ clinical knowledge and familiarity with treatment approaches; however, it is not a substitute for clinical supervision, formal training, or advanced certification in specialized treatment modalities. Participants are responsible for applying the material in accordance with their professional scope of practice, applicable licensing regulations, and established ethical standards. Completion of this course does not confer independent certification beyond that issued by the continuing education provider.

Nina Shiffrin Starin, Ph.D.
Dr. Shiffrin Starin has over 15 years of experience providing evidence-based treatment for children, teens and adults. She completed her post-baccalaureate fellowship at the National Institute of Mental Health researching youth with anxiety and depression. Dr. Shiffrin Starin earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from Yale University. While at Yale she received her certification in Kazdin Parent Management Training (Kazdin PMT), an evidence-based treatment for children with behavior problems, under the supervision of Dr. Alan Kazdin. She also received her certification in dialectical-behavior therapy for children (DBT-C) with emotion dysregulation from Dr. Francheska Perepletchikova. She was trained in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for adults with anxiety and mood disorders at the Yale Center for Anxiety and Mood Disorders and in DBT for adolescents at the Yale New Haven Hospital Intensive Outpatient program. Dr. Shiffrin Starin completed her predoctoral internship at Temple University under the supervision of Dr. Philip Kendall, where she gained experience providing the Coping Cat treatment, a cognitive-behavioral therapy program for children and adolescents with anxiety disorders and provided CBT for adults at Episcopal Hospital. Dr. Shiffrin Starin has received specialized training in body focused and repetitive behaviors and supportive parenting for anxiety children (SPACE). Dr. Shiffrin Starin also conducts research through Alvord Baker & Associates where she evaluates the effectiveness of the Resilience Builder Program ®. She is a co-author of Resilience Builder Universal, a classroom-based adaptation of the Resilience Builder Program that is designed to expand access to interventions for youth.
