Overview:
Complex trauma and DBT intersect in ways most standard training never addresses. Clients with trauma histories often present with dysregulation that DBT skills can stabilize but not resolve, leaving clinicians with a framework that manages the surface while the wound underneath remains completely untouched.
This training bridges that gap. Drawing on DBT, Polyvagal Theory, and trauma-informed clinical practice, this six-hour Masterclass gives clinicians a structured, practical framework for understanding where trauma symptoms live across the nervous system, cognition, emotion, and behavior, and how to restore regulation without re-traumatization. Rooted in evidence-based practice and informed by neuroscience, this training translates the complexity of trauma treatment into clear, immediately applicable clinical tools. Structured enough for consistency. Flexible enough for individualization. Practical enough to use the very next session.
Objectives:
Describe the theoretical rationale for integrating DBT with Polyvagal Theory and trauma-informed practice to treat complex trauma presentations.
Explain how complex trauma creates multi-system dysregulation across the nervous system, cognition, emotion, and behavior, and identify clinical indicators across each domain.
Differentiate between top-down and bottom-up regulation strategies and apply each within a phase-based DBT trauma treatment structure.
Implement trauma-adapted DBT skills across Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness modules to support stabilization without re-traumatization.
Apply a structured clinical assessment approach to map client presentations across multiple domains of dysregulation and prioritize interventions accordingly.
Develop phase-based treatment plans that integrate DBT trauma-informed principles into existing clinical frameworks across diverse client populations.
Scope and Limitations Disclosure
This training provides licensed mental health professionals with an evidence-based clinical framework for treating complex trauma using DBT-informed and trauma-adapted interventions. It focuses on assessment, skill integration, and practical application across the nervous system, mind, body, and relational systems. While evidence-based, interventions should be applied within the scope of each clinician’s license and training. This training does not offer certification in trauma treatment and is not a substitute for clinical supervision. Participants are encouraged to apply the content within their individual scope of practice and applicable professional guidelines.
