Teens & Screens Webinar: Evidence-Based Assessment & Intervention for Problematic Technology Use (RV)

Overview:

Screens have become a central part of adolescent life — but for many teens, excessive screen use is quietly affecting sleep, emotional regulation, attention, self-esteem, mood, relationships, and overall mental health. As concerns about social media, gaming, and technology continue to grow, clinicians need practical, evidence-based approaches to assess problematic screen use and effectively support both teens and their families.

This 6-hour training reviews the latest research on the impact of chronic screen use on adolescent brain development and mental health. Learn to differentiate between developmentally appropriate technology use and clinically problematic digital behaviors, and utilize evidence-based screening and assessment tools to evaluate screen use and its impact on adolescent functioning, family relationships, and treatment planning. Explore the relationship between chronic screen use and common clinical concerns — including anxiety, depression, ADHD, emotional dysregulation, sleep disturbance, body image, and social isolation.

Evidence-based interventions are presented throughout, addressing how to help adolescents build healthier digital habits, improve emotional regulation, strengthen attention, and reduce problematic technology use. The training also covers clinically sensitive concerns including cyberbullying, sexting, pornography exposure, digital safety, and AI companion and chatbot interactions. Parent coaching strategies are included to help clinicians promote healthy technology boundaries, improve family communication, reduce conflict, and foster collaborative digital media plans.

Designed for licensed mental health professionals who want practical, evidence-based tools to assess and treat problematic technology use in adolescents while supporting the entire family system.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the impact of chronic screen use on adolescent brain development, emotional regulation, sleep, attention, self-esteem, mood, relationships, and overall mental health.

  5. Apply evidence-based interventions to help adolescents develop healthier digital habits, improve emotional regulation, strengthen attention, and reduce problematic technology use.
  6. Implement developmentally appropriate clinical interventions to address concerns related to cyberbullying, sexting, pornography exposure, digital safety, AI companions, and AI/chatbot interactions in therapeutic practice.
  7. Demonstrate parent coaching strategies that promote healthy technology boundaries, improve family communication, reduce conflict, and foster collaborative digital media plans.
  8. Develop individualized treatment recommendations that integrate adolescent developmental needs, family dynamics, cultural considerations, and evidence-based digital wellness interventions.
  9. Evaluate ethical, legal, and clinical considerations related to adolescent technology use, confidentiality, mandated reporting, digital safety, and the responsible integration of technology into mental health treatment.
