Overview:
Some children have experienced trauma before they had language to describe it — abuse, neglect, emotional abandonment, disrupted early caregiving, or the compounding losses of foster and adoption transitions. That trauma reshapes their brains, their nervous systems, and their capacity to trust the very people trying to love them. What clinicians see later is a child who rejects closeness, controls their environment, lashes out at caregivers, and cannot accept the safety being offered.
Parents try everything — ignoring behaviors, confronting them, negotiating, punishing, giving in, giving up. Nothing lasts. The child escalates, the parents feel helpless and exhausted, and the family system starts to fracture around one wounded child who cannot let anyone in. Standard parenting approaches and standard child therapy interventions frequently fail with this population — because the problem isn’t behavior, it’s attachment trauma that must be healed through a specific kind of relationship.
This 6-hour training presents the theory and practice of Corrective Attachment Parenting, developed by Dr. Terry Levy — an evidence-informed clinical model designed to help children with early developmental trauma heal through safe, secure, consistent, and emotionally attuned parent-child relationships. Learn how attachment trauma affects children’s brains, emotions, and behavior. Explore assessment procedures for identifying causes, symptoms, and survival coping strategies of developmental trauma. Understand how a parent’s own attachment history, triggers, and self-awareness impact the healing process — and how to coach parents through their own regulation so they can become the healing presence traumatized children need. Practical parenting tools are presented throughout, including the 4Rs, the 10 Cs of loving leadership, and Attachment Communication Training (ACT).

Objectives:
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
- Describe basic principles of attachment, developmental trauma, and Corrective Attachment Parenting — including core concepts of child development, 10 principles of change, and 9 ways to create a healing environment.
- Identify assessment procedures for evaluating causes, symptoms, and survival coping strategies of early developmental trauma — including the child’s internal working model, core beliefs, and schemas, family system dynamics, and parents’ attachment histories using the Life Script tool.
- Differentiate the four child and adult attachment styles and their clinical implications for family treatment planning.
- Explain the Corrective Attachment Parenting framework, including five aspects of parent self-awareness, identifying triggers, and shifting parent-child patterns and dynamics to create a healing family environment.
- Demonstrate effective parenting skills including competency-based parenting, the 4Rs, prosocial coping skill development, and the 10 Cs of loving leadership.
- Use Attachment Communication Training (ACT) to foster empathy, attunement, co-regulation, safety, and security in parent-child and adult relationships.
Scope and Limitations Disclosure

Terry Levy, Ph. D
Terry M. Levy, Ph.D., B.C.F.E., has been a psychotherapist, trainer, supervisor, author and consultant for over 50 years. Dr. Levy is the director of Evergreen Psychotherapy Center and the Attachment Treatment and Training Institute in Evergreen, Colorado. He is a licensed clinical psychologist in Colorado and Florida, a Board Certified Forensic Examiner, and a Diplomate and Master Therapist of the American Psychotherapy Association. He is the co author of Attachment, Trauma & Healing (2nd edition, 2014, Jessica Kingsley Publisher, London), editor of Handbook of Attachment Interventions (2000, Elsevier Press) and co-author of Healing Parents: Helping Wounded Children Learn to Trust and Love (2006, Child Welfare League of America). Dr. Levy was the founder and previous director of the Family Life Center (Florida) and the Miami Psychotherapy Institute, which offered family systems treatment and training. He was co-founder and past-president of the board of directors of the Association for Training on Trauma and Attachment in Children (ATTACh), an international organization dedicated to attachment and its critical importance to human development. Dr. Levy is a clinical member of the American, Colorado, and Florida Psychological Associations, American and Colorado Associations of Marriage and Family Therapy, and the American Family Therapy Academy. Dr. Levy has taught seminars for mental health and social service systems throughout North America, Europe and Asia, including the American, Colorado, and Florida Psychological Associations, American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, American Academy of Psychotherapists, ATTACh.org, American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, Child Welfare League of America, National Foster Parents Association, Zur Institute, Essential Therapy Training, Professional Educational Seminars (PESI), Trauma Solutions Training, Hudson Valley Professional Development, and many others. Dr. Levy has been a clinical supervisor for interns at the University of Colorado, Couples and Family Therapy, and Clinical Mental Health Programs for 25 years.
