Overview:
Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs) can have a strong negative impact on the life course of an individual, increasing the risk of developing numerous problems from addiction to heart disease to cancer. Children who experience ACEs are also often misunderstood – seen as oppositional and defiant rather than scared and overwhelmed – and thus treated in ways that may compound the problems they face rather than resolve them.
Join Dr. Aaron Weiner for an overview of ACEs and their impact, including a deep understanding of their psychological and physiological underpinnings, as well as techniques you can use to coach caregivers on how to help children with ACEs heal and flourish.
Objectives:
- Discuss the processes through which ACEs and toxic stress cause negative psychological and physiological outcomes.
- Explain how trauma and ACEs create psychological processes that allow negative thought and feeling loops to perpetuate themselves and last indefinitely.

Dr. Aaron Weiner
Dr. Aaron Weiner is a board-certified psychologist, addiction specialist, and the Executive Vice President of the Prevention Research Institute. A leading voice on addiction, prevention, and drug policy, his expertise stems from years of integrating current research into systems-level interventions, educational programming, and clinical practice workflows. A past president of the Society of Addiction Psychology, Dr. Weiner serves as an addiction policy advisor for the American Psychological Association and sits on the Science Advisory Board for the Foundation for Drug Policy Solutions. His insights have been featured in Newsweek, USA Today, The Chicago Tribune, The Guardian, Psychology Today, and The New York Times.
