Overview:
Executive skills are underlying brain processes that help people manage their everyday lives, complete tasks, control their emotions, and overcome obstacles that interfere with productivity and behavior change. Because of executive skill challenges, adults with ADHD often struggle to finish college, maintain employment, advance in their careers, or sustain satisfactory relationships with friends and family. Failure and the recognition that they are working below their potential erode self-confidence and damage self-esteem. Even highly motivated clients with executive skill challenges struggle to follow through on the changes they need to make to improve their physical or emotional well-being. They know they need to change, they know what they need to do, and they may even take a step or two toward making those changes, only to plateau or give up. What gets in the way is not unwillingness or resistance to change, but weak executive skills.
This workshop will present a model for understanding executive skill challenges in adults with ADHD, outline a process for diagnosing ADHD that takes executive skills into account, and present a treatment model focused on executive skills coaching to help adults with ADHD navigate their world more successfully.
Objectives:
- Define twelve (12) executive skills and give examples of how these skills manifest both as strengths and as challenges in daily activities at home and at work.
- Explain the relationship between ADHD and executive skills.
- Identify key components of an ADHD assessment process.
- Develop realistic action plans tailored to individual needs and goals in various settings and situations.
- Direct clients on how to restructure their environment to reduce the impact of weak executive skills.
- Implement practical strategies to enhance executive functioning in daily life.
