Overview:
Per the CDC’s 2022 report, suicide deaths increased by four percent in the year 2021; in their 2020 report, rates of suicidal ideation and self-directed violence (SDV) have increased substantially as well.
While Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was developed for the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder, the basic principles of DBT are focused on the safety of clients and the management of intense emotions that lead to self-directed violence and death by suicide.
In this presentation, Dr. Charles Jacob will help you gain a profound understanding of DBT and its application in managing suicidal ideation and SDV. You’ll leave with practical strategies, assessment techniques, and safety planning to provide effective support to individuals in crisis. Master emotion regulation and distress tolerance skills to empower clients in navigating intense emotions and preventing self-harm.
Objectives:
By the end of the seminar, attendees will:
- Analyze basic techniques for managing SI and SDV as they apply to dialectical behavior therapy as well as treatment in general
- Determine methods of applying specific DBT skills in their work setting that will help clients to refrain from suicidal behaviors and SDV
- Appraise specific approaches to explaining basic techniques for managing SI and SDV principles to clients.

Dr. Charles Jacob
Charles Jacob, Ph.D, received his PhD from The Pennsylvania State University and completed a year of additional training at the Center for Cognitive Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania. He has over 15 years of clinical experience conducting and overseeing the delivery of mental health services to individuals with severe mood and personality disorders as well as their families. Dr. Jacob is an expert in Cognitive Therapy, as well as a highly regarded clinician and scholar. He has regularly delivered lectures on Cognitive Behavioral Therapies throughout the country and has been an invited speaker at universities throughout the world. In addition to training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy for the treatment of borderline personality disorder, Dr. Jacob is an expert in Cognitive Therapy and a highly regarded clinician and scholar. He is a recipient of PCA's David W. Hall Advocacy Award, and has been a featured interview in Counseling Today as well as NPR’s The Pulse.
