Overview:
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most extensively researched and effective treatments for a wide range of psychological disorders, with especially strong evidence for anxiety disorders. Numerous clinical trials demonstrate CBT’s ability not only to reduce symptoms but also to promote sustained recovery.
In this presentation, Dr. Leslie Sokol will focus on CBT applications for anxiety, with an emphasis on exposure therapy as a core intervention. Participants will explore how avoidance behaviors maintain anxiety and will learn strategies to help clients confront feared situations safely and effectively. Specific techniques will be presented for cognitive restructuring to challenge inaccurate threat perceptions, strengthen coping resources, and prepare clients for successful exposure work. Practical tools and evidence-based approaches will equip clinicians to disrupt anxiety cycles and foster long-term resilience in clients.
Objectives:
- Describe the CBT model of anxiety and its clinical applications.
- Explain the role of cognitive restructuring in preparing clients for exposure-based interventions.
- Identify and discuss how avoidance behaviors maintain anxiety and interfere with recovery.
- Apply evidence-based CBT techniques to support clients in confronting fears through exposure therapy.
