Overview:
Polyvagal Theory offers a powerful framework for understanding how the autonomic nervous system shapes clients’ experiences of safety, connection, and threat. This training introduces clinicians to the foundational principles of Polyvagal Theory, including the three neural circuits of the autonomic nervous system, the role of neuroception, and the importance of co-regulation in therapeutic work.
In this presentation, Courtney Rolfe will help participants learn to apply this framework to clinical practice by translating Polyvagal concepts into client-friendly language, integrating psychoeducational strategies, and utilizing both passive and active interventions to foster safety and therapeutic alliance. Special attention will be given to the unique challenges and opportunities of online therapy, with strategies to cultivate autonomic safety and enhance co-regulation in digital spaces. By the conclusion of the presentation, clinicians will be equipped with practical tools for creating safe, regulated therapeutic environments that support client engagement and healing.
Objectives:
- Describe the foundational principles of Polyvagal Theory and communicate them in client-friendly language for psychoeducation.
- Differentiate the three circuits of the autonomic nervous system and apply them in clinical education and treatment planning.
- Implement strategies to help clients activate the regulating capacities of the autonomic nervous system to establish safety and co-regulation in therapy.
- Apply Polyvagal-informed interventions to enhance therapeutic alliance and client safety in the context of online therapy.
Scope and Limitations Disclosure
This course provides licensed mental health professionals with an overview of Polyvagal Theory and its clinical applications for fostering safety, connection, and regulation in therapy. It emphasizes translating Polyvagal concepts into client-centered language and applying psychoeducational and experiential strategies to enhance co-regulation. While evidence-informed tools and interventions are presented, this training does not provide certification in Polyvagal Theory or substitute for formal training in somatic or physiological therapies. Participants are encouraged to apply the material within their professional scope of practice, ethical standards, and licensure requirements.
