Overview:
At a time when trans rights are under attack across the country, now is an especially important time to learn practical strategies to help provide support to trans and nonbinary youth and their families. Research indicates that trans people have a suicide attempt rate around 40% and family support significantly lowers depression, anxiety, and suicidality. Â
In this presentation, Deborah Coolhart will provide clinicians with strategies to assist families who are adjusting to their youths’ trans/nonbinary identities so they can provide this protective support. Additionally, because dysphoria and minority stress are such immense stressors for trans and nonbinary youth, this workshop will provide strategies for building resilience through strengthening community, well-being, and mental health.
Objectives:
Explain key terminology and core principles of gender-affirming therapy to enhance clinical competence when working with trans and nonbinary youth.
Explain evidence-based interventions to help parents understand and provide gender-affirming support to trans and nonbinary youth.
Discuss therapeutic strategies that promote resilience in trans and nonbinary youth, focusing on reducing minority stress, enhancing social support, and improving mental health outcomes.

Deborah Anne Coolhart, Ph. D, LMFT
Deb Coolhart, PhD, LMFT, has specialized in providing gender affirmative therapy for trans youth and their families for 25 years. She is an Associate Professor of Mariage and Family Therapy at Syracuse University, where she founded the Transgender Affirmative Support Team 20 years ago. This team provides gender affirming therapy and engages in local activism to support the trans and nonbinary community. Deb is coauthor of The Gender Quest Workbook: A Guide for Teens and Young Adults Exploring Gender Identity and she has authored many journal articles and book chapters focusing on supporting trans youth and helping parents grow in their understanding and support for their trans children. Her forthcoming coauthored book guides trans and nonbinary youth in building resilience through strengthening community, mental health, and well-being.
