Overview:
Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy offers a groundbreaking lens for understanding and healing the mind. This 2-day experiential masterclass invites mental health professionals to explore how parts work and Self-leadership can transform the therapeutic process.
Led by Stacy Ruse, LPC, IFS-Approved Consultant and trauma expert, this immersive training bridges theory, neuroscience, and practical application. Designed to help clinicians work more confidently with trauma, anxiety, depression, and complex relational wounds.
Through guided demonstrations, experiential exercises, and reflective integration, you’ll learn how to identify and safely engage protective and wounded parts, cultivate your own Self-energy, and facilitate deep, sustainable healing in clients.
By the end of this training, you’ll not only understand the structure and principles of the IFS model, but also feel equipped to bring this transformative approach into every session with clarity, confidence, and compassion.
Objectives:
- Describe the foundational principles and structure of the Internal Family Systems model.
- Identify protectors, managers, firefighters, and exiles within clients’ systems.
- Demonstrate skills to unblend from parts and cultivate Self-energy.
- Apply IFS-informed strategies to trauma and dissociative presentations.
- Integrate Polyvagal-informed awareness when working with clients’ nervous system states.
- Implement strategies to gain permission from protectors and safely access exiled material.
- Facilitate communication and collaboration among polarized parts.
- Recognize and manage therapist parts to maintain Self-leadership during sessions.
- Demonstrate culturally attuned, inclusive applications of IFS therapy.
- Integrate IFS techniques within other modalities (EMDR, CBT, Somatic, Mindfulness).

3. Working with Protectors
- Understanding Managers and Firefighters
- Unblending techniques and the 6 F’s
- Gaining permission to approach Exiles
4. Cultivating Self-Energy
- The 11 C’s of Self-energy (expanded model)
- Therapist Self versus Self-led therapist
- Practices for Self-to-part connection and co-regulation
5. Experiential Practice
- Guided meditation: “Meet a Part”
- Extensive group practice or dyad practice (if applicable): Unblending and Self-to-Part communication
Day 2: Applying IFS in Trauma Treatment (6 Hours)

- How trauma fragments the system
- Nervous system states and parts activation
- Integrating IFS with Polyvagal theory and somatic awareness
2. Working with Exiles and Burdens
- Recognizing and differentiating exiled parts
- The unburdening process (witnessing, retrieval, integration)
- Titration and pacing in trauma work
3. Working with Polarizations & System Dynamics
- Identifying internal conflicts
- Facilitating inner dialogues and compassion between parts
- Repair and reconciliation within the system
4. Therapist Self and Ethical Practice
- Managing countertransference and therapist parts
- Self-regulation and attunement in session
- Cultural humility and collective healing
5. Integration & Application
- Case vignettes and guided demonstrations
- Clinical applications across modalities (EMDR, somatic, CBT)
- Closing experiential: “Self as the Healing Presence”

This 2-day masterclass provides licensed mental health professionals with an overview of Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy, including its principles, structure, and integration with trauma-informed and somatic approaches. While participants will learn IFS-informed strategies and experiential techniques, this course does not provide formal certification in IFS or qualify attendees as IFS practitioners. Participants are encouraged to apply the material within their professional scope of practice and ethical standards.
