Motivational Interviewing for Resistant Clients: Core Skills That Create Lasting Behavior Change (RV)

Overview:

In this presentation, Kristin Dempsey will provide an applied introduction to Motivational Interviewing (MI) with a focus on its four core components: the spirit of MI, foundational micro skills, the MI process, and the role of change talk in facilitating behavior change. Through demonstrations, clinical examples, and population-specific scenarios, participants will examine how these elements work together to support client engagement, problem exploration, and motivation for change. Special attention will be given to strategies for working with individuals who are mandated to treatment, as well as common provider “traps” that can hinder therapeutic progress.

The training emphasizes the development of practical skills that enhance providers’ ability to foster collaborative, culturally responsive conversations that promote growth. By the conclusion of the workshop, participants will identify a specific MI skill to intentionally practice and integrate into their clinical work.

Objectives:

  • Apply the four components of the spirit of Motivational Interviewing to enhance engagement with individuals seeking behavioral health services.
  • Define ambivalence and provide at least one example of how it presents in children, youth, or caregivers receiving behavioral health support.
  • Identify four types of preparatory change talk and three types of mobilizing change talk to facilitate goal-directed conversations.
  • Select and implement five MI micro skills that promote effective discussions about change in behavioral health contexts.
  • Determine when and how to use MI micro skills across the four tasks of MI when counseling individuals seeking behavioral health services.
