Overview:
The number of people who died from a drug overdose in 2021 was over six times the number in 1999. The number of drug overdose deaths increased more than 16% from 2020 to 2021. Over 75% of the nearly 107,000 drug overdose deaths in 2021 involved an opioid. There is a great need for timelier tracking of nonfatal and fatal drug overdoses, improving toxicology to better track polysubstance-involved deaths, enhancing linkage to care for people with opioid use disorder and risk for opioid overdose, improving prescription drug monitoring programs, implementing health systems interventions, partnering with public safety, and implementing other innovative surveillance and prevention activities.
Objectives:
- Analyze The Most Recent Opioid Epidemic Trends to understand historical and current trends in opioid use, misuse, and overdose rates.Â
- Evaluate Opioid Pharmacology: Explore the pharmacological properties of opioids, including receptor interactions, tolerance, and withdrawal.Â
- Assess Risks and Behavioral Patterns: Examine behavioral patterns related to opioid use, including risk factors, motivations, and patterns of addiction.Â
- Critique Current Effectiveness and Limitations of Treatment Approaches, Best Practices: Evaluate existing treatment modalities, (medication-assisted treatment (MAT), counseling, and harm reduction strategies).Â
- Review Ethical Considerations and dilemmas faced by healthcare professionals, policymakers, and researchers in the context of opioid management. Address issues of stigma, patient autonomy, and informed consent

Paul Hardy
Paul Hardy is a respected figure in the field of addiction recovery, with over 25 years of experience as a National Master Addictions Counselor (NMAC) and Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC). He is the founder and executive director of Recovery for Life, a leading substance abuse recovery program in Virginia Beach that offers a holistic approach to addiction recovery. Dr. Hardy is dedicated to developing effective recovery programs, training recovery leaders, and designing innovative program curricula. He and his wife Suzie founded Transition Homes for Hope, which provides residential treatment for individuals seeking recovery after incarceration.
