Overview:
A growing body of research highlights a troubling reality: while many parents believe their children are emotionally supported, fewer than 60% of U.S. teens report receiving adequate social and emotional care. This gap is linked to rising rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation—especially among adolescent girls.
In today’s digital world, factors such as social media, academic pressure, and a lack of emotional literacy have made it increasingly difficult for young people to maintain their mental health. However, research also shows that when kids develop resilience skills, they’re better able to handle life’s challenges, regulate their emotions, and thrive through adversity.
This training provides clinicians, educators, and caregivers with practical, evidence-based strategies to strengthen children’s emotional resilience, teaching healthy coping, while fostering open communication. You’ll learn how to recognize risk factors, counter the impact of modern stressors like screen time and isolation, and empower families to raise mentally stronger kids—at home, in school, and in therapy.
Objectives:
- Identify Core Concepts of Mental Strength. Participants will grasp a working definition of mental strength (i.e., good mental/behavioral health), its components, and its importance in child development. These will serve as relatable objectives for counseling families.
- List Key Factors Influencing Mental Health. Participants will explore various factors that impact children’s mental health, including biological, social, and environmental influences.Â
- Analyze Recent Research and Trends. Participants will review recent APA research on child and adolescent mental health, focusing on current challenges and potential solutions.
- Develop Practical Strategies. Participants will discover and develop practical tools and techniques for fostering mental strength in children, including resilience-building activities and positive parenting practices translatable to family systems counseling.
Scope and Limitations
This training provides clinicians, educators, and caregivers with evidence-informed strategies to promote emotional resilience and mental strength in children and adolescents. While research and clinical practices are discussed, the course does not offer certification in parenting interventions or substitute for specialized training in child or adolescent mental health. Participants are encouraged to apply the material within their professional scope of practice and in accordance with applicable licensure and ethical standards.

Dr. Hardy is dedicated to developing effective recovery programs, training recovery leaders, and designing innovative program curricula. He and his wife Suzie founded Transition Homes for Hope, which provides residential treatment for individuals seeking recovery after incarceration. His expertise in working with diverse populations is widely recognized, and he is a sought-after educator, speaker, and presenter. Dr. Hardy has presented at various conferences and organizations, including Virginia Court DUI Services, Christian Psychotherapy, and the Virginia Bar Association.
