Overview:
Individuals coping with anxiety are especially vulnerable to having difficulties with getting to sleep, remaining asleep, or getting back to sleep once awakened. In attempting to protect us from danger, the brain is also denying us hours of sleep, which are very important to our health. Our brains and bodies are very dependent on sleep periods occurring regularly. When we do not get enough sleep, we experience negative effects on mood, memory, immunity, and other important aspects of our lives.
Fortunately, our knowledge about the neurological, emotional, and cognitive processes that underlie fear and anxiety allows us to provide interventions to promote sleep. In this presentation, Dr. Pittman provides clear and understandable descriptions of how the amygdala and cortex interfere with sleep, and how to help clients make changes to protect and promote extended hours of sleep.
Methods for assessing clients’ sleep difficulties and sleep environment are provided. Interventions demonstrated to improve sleep are presented, based on established CBT approaches to insomnia, as well as grounded in an understanding of the brain-based processes that frequently compromise sleep. Methods for impacting both cortex and amygdala processes are provided.
Dr. Pittman’s neurologically informed CBT approach is accessible to clients of all educational levels. Methods that target both the amygdala and the cortex in order to prevent interference with sleep are presented in this course. Participants will be trained in explaining the importance of extended periods of sleep to clients, as well as introducing the amygdala and cortex in ways that motivate clients and promote engagement in treatment.
Objectives:
- Explain the importance of obtaining extended sleep, particularly REM sleep periods.
- Assess clients’ sleep and sleep habits, as well as important aspects of the sleeping environment.
- Describe the amygdala and cortex and how they produce arousal that interferes with sleep.
- Utilize specific brain-based cognitive-behavioral interventions for both the amygdala and cortex that will allow clients to obtain the sleep they need.
Limitations:
This program provides an overview of sleep disturbances in clients with anxiety and introduces neurologically-informed CBT strategies to support treatment. It is not a substitute for specialized training in sleep medicine or polysomnography, nor does it address all possible co-occurring medical or psychological conditions that may affect sleep.
