Overview:
Personality disorders can profoundly impact the quality and stability of intimate relationships. This training examines the ways in which disordered personality functioning influences closeness, trust, and connection between partners. Particular attention will be given to the concept of codependency, a frequent risk factor for those in relationships with individuals who meet diagnostic criteria for personality disorders.
In this presentation, Dr. Lester will also address the role of emotional dysregulation in relationship difficulties, highlighting its disruptive effects on communication, conflict resolution, and intimacy. Participants will gain an understanding of the principles for improving relational functioning and will explore strategies to strengthen intimacy, prevent codependent dynamics, and effectively manage emotional dysregulation. Practical techniques and clinical applications will be emphasized to support healthier relationship outcomes for clients.
Objectives:

- Demonstrate strategies for reducing or preventing codependent behaviors within relationships impacted by personality disorders.
Scope and Limitations Disclosure
This course provides an overview of the relational impacts of personality disorders, including codependency, emotional dysregulation, and attachment disruptions. The material is intended for educational purposes to enhance clinical understanding and inform evidence-based practice when working with individuals and couples affected by personality-disordered functioning. This training does not qualify participants for certification in any specific treatment model and is not a substitute for clinical supervision. Attendees are encouraged to apply course concepts within their professional scope of practice and in accordance with ethical and licensure standards.

Gregory Lester, Ph. D
Gregory W. Lester, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist licensed in Colorado and Texas. He has been in practice for over 40 years, has personally evaluated and treated over 3500 patients, and travels widely to speak at conferences and teach continuing education seminars. In his specialty of personality disorders, Dr. Lester has trained more human services professionals than any other individual, having presented over 2,000 trainings to over 250,000 professionals in 132 cities across the globe. Dr. Lester is the author of four best-selling clinical manuals on the diagnosis and treatment of personality disorders, as well as Power with People, a manual of interpersonal effectiveness that is currently in its second edition and twentieth printing, Shrunken Heads, an irreverent memoire of the rigors of his graduate school training, and Central Intelligence Bureau: The Shrink, the Chip, and the Spy, a spy thriller novel. Dr. Lester’s research and articles have appeared in many professional and popular publications, including The Journal of the American Medical Association, The Western Journal of Medicine, The Journal of Behavior Therapy, The Journal of Marriage and Family Therapy, The Yearbook of Family Practice, The Transactional Analysis Journal, Restaurant Hospitality, and Black Belt Magazine. Dr. Lester lives in Colorado, where in his off-hours he is a marathon runner and mountain- climber, as well as an avid skier, marksman, certified Corvette race driver, and extra-class amateur radio operator. He is also a Master instructor at the largest martial arts school in Colorado, where he holds fifth-degree black belts in both traditional Tang Soo Do and Olympic-style Taekwondo, and was named “Instructor of the Year.”
