Overview:
Executive skills sometimes referred to as the “hidden curriculum” are the foundational cognitive processes that enable individuals to plan, organize, remember, and follow through on tasks. These skills, including sustained attention, working memory, planning, organization, and emotional regulation, are essential for academic achievement, behavioral success, and overall adaptive functioning.
Neuroscience research shows that executive skills take approximately 25 years to reach full maturity and are shaped by modeling, experience, and direct instruction. This workshop provides a practical, evidence-based framework for understanding the development of executive skills and integrating support strategies into classroom routines, therapeutic interventions, and daily activities. In this presentation, Dr. Peg Dawson will help participants gain tools to identify strengths and challenges, modify environments to reduce executive load, explicitly teach executive functioning skills, and use motivational systems to enhance practice and persistence.
Objectives:
- Define the core executive skills and identify how they manifest as strengths and challenges across academic, home, and social settings.
- Apply evidence-based strategies to teach and reinforce executive skills in children and adolescents through modeling, practice, and environmental support.
- Implement three methods to support youth with executive skill challenges: environmental modification, direct instruction in natural contexts, and motivational reinforcement to encourage skill practice and mastery.
