Overview:
Although medical and recreational marijuana programs are legal in many U.S. states, and cannabidiol (CBD) is widely available, research continues to evolve on the effects of cannabinoids on the brain and body. Despite increased public access, health and behavioral health professionals often receive limited formal training in cannabinoid science, resulting in clinical knowledge gaps.
This evidence-based training, led by Dr. Aaron Weiner, explores key cannabinoids: THC, CBD, and others, by examining their pharmacological effects, therapeutic potential, and associated risks. Participants will also explore public health, policy, and economic dimensions of cannabis use and gain strategies for addressing cannabis use disorder through a biopsychosocial lens.
Objectives:
- Identify at least three therapeutic applications for cannabinoids.
- Identify at least three risk factors of THC use.
- Explain the primary differences between THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids in terms of function and availability.
- Identify how to approach the treatment of cannabis use disorder from a biopsychosocial lens.
Limitations:
The content in this course is based on current empirical research; however, cannabis-related science is rapidly evolving, and long-term effects are still under investigation. Several studies cited require further replication, larger sample sizes, and long-term outcome data.
Additionally, interventions or policy discussions mentioned in this course may not fall within the legal or ethical scope of all licensed professionals. Clinicians are responsible for practicing within their licensure and professional guidelines.
