Complex trauma impacts the nervous system, attachment, sense of self, and overall functioning — and clinicians often feel underprepared when working with the chronic dysregulation, extreme symptoms, and dissociation that don’t respond well to traditional therapy alone. Standard cognitive approaches often stall with these clients because complex trauma isn’t just a thought pattern to reframe. It lives in the body, in the nervous system, in the protective parts of the self that developed to survive experiences that should never have happened.
This 12-hour two-day training teaches clinicians how to understand and treat complex trauma through an integrative lens — using a nervous system and parts-informed, somatic approach that draws on neuroscience, the neurobiology of trauma, attachment science, EMDR/AIP-informed concepts, Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, and body-based healing. Learn practical tools that help clients build regulation, embodiment, and integration safely and effectively — without triggering the overwhelm, shutdown, fragmentation, or retraumatization that often derails trauma treatment.
The training emphasizes pacing, stabilization, co-regulation, and heart-centered interventions clinicians can immediately integrate into their work. Explore how to work with protective defenses compassionately while reducing overwhelm and fragmentation. Experiential, practical, and immediately applicable — this training is designed for clinicians working with developmental trauma, chronic dysregulation, dissociation, attachment wounds, and complex PTSD presentations.

Objectives:
- Describe the core neurobiological and relational impacts of complex trauma.
- Differentiate complex and developmental trauma from single-incident trauma presentations.
- Explain key principles of Polyvagal Theory and their application in trauma treatment.
- Identify nervous system signals of dysregulation, dissociation, or protective adaptations in clinical practice.
- Identify and apply somatic, nervous system-informed tools that support regulation and safety.
- Apply parts-informed strategies for working with protectors, inner conflict, shame, and fragmentation.
- Integrate interventions that strengthen therapeutic attunement and co-regulation.
- Develop pacing and titration strategies that reduce overwhelm and retraumatization.
- Incorporate practical interventions for grounding, orienting, embodiment, and emotional regulation.
- Develop a more integrative and flexible treatment approach for clients with complex trauma presentations.

Content is intended for licensed mental health professionals and is designed to introduce concepts and practical tools for clinical consideration; it does not constitute specialized certification or replace formal training, supervision, or consultation required to treat complex or high-risk trauma presentations, including active dissociation or destabilization. Completion of this training does not confer an independent credential, license, or specialty designation beyond the provider’s certificate of completion.

Dr. Charles Jacob
Charles Jacob, Ph.D, received his PhD from The Pennsylvania State University and completed a year of additional training at the Center for Cognitive Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania. He has over 15 years of clinical experience conducting and overseeing the delivery of mental health services to individuals with severe mood and personality disorders as well as their families. Dr. Jacob is an expert in Cognitive Therapy, as well as a highly regarded clinician and scholar. He has regularly delivered lectures on Cognitive Behavioral Therapies throughout the country and has been an invited speaker at universities throughout the world. In addition to training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy for the treatment of borderline personality disorder, Dr. Jacob is an expert in Cognitive Therapy and a highly regarded clinician and scholar. He is a recipient of PCA's David W. Hall Advocacy Award, and has been a featured interview in Counseling Today as well as NPR’s The Pulse.
