Overview:
Narcissistic abuse is one of the most difficult and confusing dynamics clients face — and one of the most challenging for clinicians to treat. Clients present completely destabilized, questioning their own reality, sense of self, and worth. The patterns of manipulation are subtle, cumulative, and often invisible until the damage is done.
This 6-hour training gives mental health professionals the tools to recognize the hidden patterns of narcissistic abuse and provide effective, trauma-informed care. Gain a comprehensive understanding of the spectrum of narcissism — from personality traits to Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) — and how these patterns show up in relationships. Learn how emotional abuse and gaslighting work to systematically destabilize clients, and how to assess the short- and long-term impact on mental health, including trauma symptoms, attachment disruptions, and identity disturbance.
Practical, evidence-based interventions are presented throughout, including psychoeducation, boundary-setting, cognitive-behavioral approaches, and trauma-informed stabilization skills. The training also addresses ethical challenges unique to this work — including countertransference management and safety planning — to help clinicians navigate this complex clinical territory with confidence.
Designed for licensed mental health professionals who want practical, evidence-based tools to recognize, assess, and treat clients impacted by narcissistic abuse, emotional manipulation, and gaslighting.
Objectives:
- Define narcissistic personality traits and differentiate between Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) and narcissistic relational patterns.
- Identify the dynamics of emotional abuse and how they manifest within narcissistic relationships.
- Explain the psychological mechanisms and clinical implications of gaslighting as a manipulation tactic.
- Assess the short- and long-term impact of narcissistic abuse and gaslighting on clients’ mental health, including trauma symptoms, attachment disruptions, and identity disturbance.
- Apply evidence-based interventions and trauma-informed approaches to support survivors of narcissistic abuse.
- Develop ethical and clinical strategies to manage countertransference and avoid re-traumatization during treatment.
Scope and Limitations Disclosure
This 6-hour training provides mental health professionals with an overview of narcissistic abuse dynamics, including emotional abuse and gaslighting, their psychological and clinical impact, and evidence-based, trauma-informed intervention strategies. Content includes assessment considerations, boundary-setting, cognitive-behavioral approaches, and countertransference management. This training does not substitute for clinical supervision or specialty training when working with complex, high-risk, or safety-critical presentations, including active abuse situations or clients with significant personality pathology. Participants are responsible for applying all content within the boundaries of their professional scope of practice, licensure requirements, and applicable ethical standards. Completion of this training does not confer specialized certification beyond the provider’s certificate of completion.

Ellen Biros, MS, LCSW, C-PD
Ellen Biros is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and adjunct professor. With over 20 years of experience in social work, Ellen is a seasoned expert in the treatment and assessment of individuals with personality disorders, substance abuse issues, and emotional regulation problems. Ellen earned a Master’s degree in Justice from American University in Washington, DC, and a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Georgia. She has been sharing her knowledge with students at Tulane University in the School of Social Work and The University of Phoenix in the College of Social Services and the College of Natural Sciences. She is known for her dynamic and engaging teaching style and her ability to inspire students to achieve their full potential. Ellen is also an accomplished author and speaker. She has authored several continuing education seminars that have been well-received by professionals in the field. Her seminars, such as “Personality Disorders: The Challenges of the Hidden Agenda,” “Antisocial, Borderline, Narcissistic and Histrionic: Effective Treatment for Cluster B Personality Disorders,” and “Unmasking Manipulative Relationships: Effective Strategies for Countering Covert Abuse,.”
