Dynamics of Substance Abuse & Criminal Activity

One of every 144 American adults is behind bars for a crime in which substances were involved, and less than 13 percent of offenders identified as needing treatment receive it. The majority of people in the criminal justice system in need of substance use disorder treatment are not receiving services – during the pretrial period, while incarcerated, or after release to the community.
