Overview:
Grief encompasses the range of unpleasant emotions that occur after a loss. Grief is most associated with death, but many other types of loss can result in differing levels of grief. It can be a strong and overwhelming emotion. Grief can cause one to feel numb and separated from daily life.
Most can understand the natural reaction to great loss yet the experience is also uniquely personal. No one can fully understand how the grieving person actually feels and how the loss has affected them. Loss and grief are inevitable. It’s part of life to suffer loss from time to time. Grief can occur at any age. Regardless of age, grief is an emotionally painful part of life. The process of grieving can’t be completely controlled but with the knowledge and tools, those suffering from grief can learn to manage and regain clarity in their life purpose and perspective.
Clinicians often struggle to develop effective approaches to counseling grief clients. New research regarding the appropriate diagnosis of grief clients, strategies on how to assess grief severity, and clarification about what is meant by “complicated grief” continue to develop and inform clinical best practice.
This presentation will review the most commonly used models for understanding grief. It will provide you with tools and interventions to more confidently assist clients in navigating the grief process. The presentation will also focus on counselor self-care and discuss how to appropriately manage and care for ourselves in this demanding, yet fulfilling, work.
Objectives:
- Discuss the current models for conceptualizing grief and how these influence treatment planning.
- Analyze and differentiate clinical symptoms to diagnose grief clients appropriately.
- Implement functional interventions for grief counseling adaptable to use with any clients.
- Demonstrate three new interventions to use with bereaved clients.
- Determine when grief has become “complicated” and develop an appropriate treatment strategy.
- Develop strategies of self-awareness and self-care for grief counselors as it relates to clinical practice.

Dr. Fred Hall, MPH, M.S. LPC-S, NCC, ACS, MCHES
Dr. Fred Hall is a distinguished counselor and entrepreneur with over three decades of experience in clinical mental health. He holds a Doctor of Education degree in Counseling Psychology with a Concentration in Counselor Education and Supervision from Argosy University and the American School of Professional Psychology, in addition to a Master of Science in Guidance and Counseling, as well as a Master of Public Health in Behavioral Health Education and Promotion, from Jackson State University. Dr. Hall's clinical specializations include working with Serious Mental Illness, Couples and Families, Marriage and Pre-Marriage, Depression, Anxiety, Trauma, Grief, Adjustment issues, and Anger Management. Dr. Hall is a National Board Certified Counselor (NCC), Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS), a Board Certified Telemental Health Provider (BC-TMH), and a Licensed Professional Counselor & Supervisor for Mississippi and Louisiana. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Hall is an author, speaker, coach, trainer, innovator, podcaster, blogger, and entrepreneur. He develops and trains leaders worldwide, both online and onsite, working with a diverse range of individuals and organizations, including entrepreneurs, pastors and ministry leaders, corporate executives, and global business/Not-for-profit administrators. Through his professional Speaking, Coaching (Life, Spiritual, Business, and Executive), Corporate Training, and Small Group Development, Dr. Hall provides capacity-building operations that strengthen individuals, organizations, and businesses. He is a Leadership Consultant to businesses and organizations and coaches pastors and ministry leaders. Dr. Hall's work extends beyond the United States as he trains and consults yearly in Tanzania and Uganda regarding marriage education curricula, developing peer counseling models, and community/church family wellness ministry opportunities.
