Overview:
The presentation, Guiding the Conversation with Motivational Interviewing: Focus on Change Talk and Sustain Talk, will begin with definitions of change talk and sustain talk. There will be a discussion about appropriate target behaviors. An overview of the research on change talk will be provided.Â
Attendees will learn concrete strategies for eliciting change talk and will practice identifying change talk. This presentation is considered intermediate and is designed for individuals who have some prior knowledge of motivational interviewing and an understanding of motivational interviewing spirit.

Dr. Josephine DeMarce
Dr. Josephine DeMarce is a skilled Licensed Clinical Psychologist with extensive experience and expertise in her field. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biopsychology from Oberlin College in 1999 and went on to complete a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Tech in 2006. Since 2012, Dr. DeMarce has been a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, providing both in-person and online training in Motivational Interviewing, Motivational Enhancement Therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy for substance use disorders to individuals and organizations. Currently employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs since 2005, Dr. DeMarce is also dedicated to research and program evaluation activities. Her focus includes evaluating dissemination and implementation efforts to help ensure that effective treatments and interventions are widely available to those who need them.
