Overview:
This 3-hour webinar offers clinicians an in-depth exploration of Cluster B personality disorders: Antisocial, Borderline, Narcissistic, and Histrionic. These clients often present with complex interpersonal challenges, emotional dysregulation, and behaviors that can impact the therapeutic alliance and treatment progress.
Participants will learn how to recognize key diagnostic features, identify symptom patterns, and apply evidence-based strategies to improve therapeutic outcomes. The course will cover effective approaches for managing manipulation, emotional volatility, boundary violations, and impaired empathy—common features of Cluster B presentations.
Treatment modalities discussed will include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI), with a focus on practical application. Clinicians will leave with structured tools for improving treatment planning, addressing resistance, and fostering long-term behavior change in clients with personality pathology.
This intermediate-level course is delivered in a recorded lecture format and integrates clinical examples, and strategies from evidence-based modalities such as CBT, DBT, and Motivational Interviewing. Participants will learn through discussion and structured frameworks to assess and manage symptom presentation in Cluster B personality disorders.
Objectives:
- Identify and diagnose your antisocial, narcissistic, histrionic, and borderline clients.
- Examine client symptom presentation, treatment, and management of each cluster B client type.
- Explain how to manage antisocial, narcissistic, histrionic, and borderline symptomatology and how this can better assist with treatment planning and reduction of symptoms.
- Identify and counter treatment blockades to make therapeutic gains.
- Implement CBT, DBT, and MI techniques to manage emotional dysregulation, improve self-worth, reduce impaired perceptions, and improve empathy.
Limitations:
While treatment models such as CBT and DBT are supported by empirical literature for managing Cluster B symptoms, outcomes vary based on client engagement, comorbidities, and therapeutic alliance. Additionally, personality disorder diagnoses are sometimes stigmatized or misapplied. Clinicians are encouraged to approach these presentations with flexibility and awareness of differential diagnoses and cultural considerations.
