Overview:
The polyvagal theory of Stephen Porges’s Ph.D. has been with us for 25 years, but its practical application to therapy has been slow to develop. Porges’ research eloquently describes the dual role of the vagus nerve in regulating the autonomic nervous system and how it functions subliminally as part of our “social engagement system.”
In this presentation, Mike Bricker will help you explore how this seminal research can be operationalized to help patients recovering from Substance Use Disorders, PTSD, attachment disorders, and emotional dysregulation. This interactive presentation will explore how these autonomic responses can be brought into both cognitive and somatic awareness and turned into powerful tools for recovery and relapse prevention.
Objectives:
- Explain in general terms the form and function of the vagus nerve in the autonomic nervous system, and its role in emotional self-regulation
- Describe 3 characteristics of the process of “neuroception” and how it coordinates with the mirror neuron system in the brain to function as our “social engagement system” and safety radar
- Explain how polyvagal awareness can help with more effective coping skills after the CoVid-19 pandemic
- Demonstrate and implement these concepts in their work with handouts Provided

Mike Bricker MS, CADC-II, NCAC-2, LPC, is a consultant on “dual recovery” from substance use and mental disorders through the STEMSS Institute and specializes in blending Western research-based treatment with other Wisdom Traditions. Mike is also a Behavioral Health Clinician for LifeStance Behavioral Health in Eugene, Oregon, and specializes in providing trauma-responsive care for complex trauma, chronic pain, and Medication- Assisted Treatment. He has educated and trained Counselors in Alaska, Oregon & the Navajo Nation. Mike is a seasoned trainer who presents regularly at national conferences, an invited reviewer for SAMHSA grants. He has been a clinician, consultant and teacher for over 40 years.
