Overview:
Emotional neglect is a very common but often under-discussed and unrecognized form of trauma and childhood mistreatment. Often clients present to therapy or other social services with a variety of challenges with emotion regulation, self-identity, self-esteem, and relationships.
These clients may find themself confused, asserting things such as “I was never abused” or “I always had food on the table,” therefore feeling shame and confusion about why they feel the way they do. Emotional neglect is sometimes considered the “invisible” form of trauma, as it can be hard to identify as a direct cause of a child’s current emotional or behavioral challenges.
This course peels back the layers, unveiling the caregiver traits and behaviors contributing to emotional neglect in children and shedding light on how these experiences imprint upon their behaviors and emotional well-being.
Objectives:
- Discuss how various caregiver behaviors and traits can contribute to experiences of emotional neglect.
- Identify a variety of common emotional and behavioral outcomes as a result of childhood emotional neglect.
- Discuss how experiences of emotional neglect in childhood can contribute to self-esteem and relational challenges in adulthood.
- Explain the necessary components of healthy emotional development and attachment in children.
