12:00 PM – 3:15 PM ET
Overview:
the autonomic nervous system through the lens of the revolutionary Polyvagal Theory. Participants will be invited to learn about the fundamental principles of the Polyvagal Theory, such as neuroception, our internal surveillance system, our regulated and adaptive survival states, and the Social Engagement System and co-regulation. Participants will have the opportunity to explore their own nervous system states, engage in experiential exercises to bring this awareness to life, and learn how to bring this wisdom into clinical work. With this approach, participants can learn how to support a healing environment to promote growth and change, support trauma healing, and teach clients a new way of understanding and managing their experience in the world.
Participants in this workshop will be introduced to some of the recent, compelling research on neuroscience and interoception, and how it relates to autonomic nervous system functioning. Utilizing a research-based understanding of the nervous system, participants will learn core principles that support creating safety and connection, both in the therapeutic work, and as a clinical outcome that clients can build on their own, with the help of the nervous system-guided interventions presented in this workshop.
Objectives:
- Distinguish three circuits of the autonomic nervous system for use in client psychoeducation.
- Determine how to help clients engage the regulating capacities of the autonomic nervous system that create an environment of safety.
- Assess for patterns in clients’ autonomic states to better inform treatment planning.
