Overview:
At some point during their lives, 81% of women and 43% of men experience sexual harassment or assault. Sexual harassment in the workplace has been a much-discussed topic in the media, given all the high-profile scandals in the past couple of years. To support clients who have been victims of sexual harassment, attendees of this presentation will learn the definition of sexual harassment, the various types of harassment, and legal factors.
In this presentation, Joyce Marter will share the laws that protect victims and empower clients who are experiencing harassment to advocate for themselves. Participants will learn treatment implications and approaches for addressing trauma and other symptomatology related to harassment.
Objectives:
- Define sexual harassment, the various types, and legal implications.
- Recognize the verbal, nonverbal, physical, and digital forms of sexual harassment.
- Identify laws that protect victims to empower clients experiencing harassment to speak up, document the abuse, and file a report.
- Provide resources and referrals to assist clients dealing with sexual harassment in the workplace.
- Explain treatment implications and approaches for addressing trauma and other symptomatology related to harassment.

Joyce Marter
Joyce Marter is a licensed clinical professional counselor with over twenty years of experience in the field. She specializes in mindfulness, self-esteem, career, and the psychology of money. She is also the founder of Urban Balance, a counseling practice with over 175 therapists across six states. As a respected leader in her profession, Marter has served as the President of the Illinois Counseling Association and the Illinois Mental Health Counselors Association. She has also chaired the Midwest Region of the American Counseling Association. She is an adjunct faculty member at The Family Institute at Northwestern University. Marter is a sought-after speaker and corporate trainer and a member of the National Speakers Association. She frequently appears as a mental health expert in the media, with features in prominent outlets like The Wall Street Journal, CNN, and U.S. News & World Report. Her book, The Financial Mindset Fix: A Mental Fitness Program for an Abundant Life, is set to be published by Sounds True in July.
