Overview:
The presentation, Motivational Interviewing (MI) for Substance Use Disorders, will begin by explaining the four elements of Motivational Interviewing “spirit”: Acceptance, Collaboration, Evocation, and Compassion.
The “four processes” of MI will be defined. Attendees will learn about the role of open questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries in MI and will view a demonstration. “Change talk” and “sustain talk” will be described, and examples will be provided. The “elicit-provide-elicit” model for information exchange will be demonstrated, and ways to include this exchange in treating substance use disorders will be discussed.

- Demonstrate “OARS” skills.
- Describe “change talk” and “sustain talk”
- Demonstrate the “elicit-provide-elicit” model for information exchange as it applies to the assessment and treatment of substance use disorders.

Dr. Josephine DeMarce
Dr. Josephine DeMarce is a skilled Licensed Clinical Psychologist with extensive experience and expertise in her field. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biopsychology from Oberlin College in 1999 and went on to complete a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Tech in 2006. Since 2012, Dr. DeMarce has been a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, providing both in-person and online training in Motivational Interviewing, Motivational Enhancement Therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy for substance use disorders to individuals and organizations. Currently employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs since 2005, Dr. DeMarce is also dedicated to research and program evaluation activities. Her focus includes evaluating dissemination and implementation efforts to help ensure that effective treatments and interventions are widely available to those who need them.
