Overview:
Many clients with trauma and abandonment histories struggle with emotional regulation, self-worth, and difficulty maintaining healthy relationships. These challenges are often rooted in early childhood experiences that continue to influence behavior and emotional responses into adulthood.
This training explores the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) strategies to help clients address trauma-related issues conceptualized through the lens of “inner child” work. Participants will learn how to assess symptoms stemming from childhood emotional wounds and apply evidence-based CBT tools—including cognitive restructuring, emotional regulation techniques, mindfulness-based interventions, expressive writing, and reparenting exercises.
Through case examples and practical tools, this webinar will guide clinicians in helping clients increase emotional awareness, challenge negative core beliefs, improve attachment security, and build healthier relational patterns.
Objectives:
- Discuss the concept of the inner child and its relation to trauma and abandonment.
- Identify negative thought patterns and behaviors associated with inner child wounds.
- Explain CBT strategies to address inner child wounds, including cognitive restructuring and exposure therapy.
- Develop skills to help clients build healthy relationships and coping mechanisms.
This recorded webinar is delivered through lecture and includes case examples, structured CBT techniques, expressive writing exercises, and reparenting tools. Participants will engage with evidence-informed strategies to assess and treat trauma-related symptoms rooted in early childhood experiences.
Limitations:
While “inner child” work is frequently used in clinical practice, it is not a formalized therapeutic model in DSM-5. Responses to reparenting and expressive interventions may vary depending on individual client histories, attachment style, and cultural context. Clinicians are encouraged to evaluate these methods within a trauma-informed, evidence-based framework, and to adapt interventions based on client needs and treatment response.

About Online Trauma and Abandonment CE Courses:
Online trauma and abandonment CE courses provide mental health professionals with trauma-informed training on interventions that are key to helping clients with complex trauma, personality disorders, and substance abuse issues rooted in abandonment trauma.
Neuroscience has made significant progress in understanding how abandonment trauma can impact the nervous system. Especially when it occurs in childhood, it can lead to long-term changes in brain structure and function. This dysregulation can persist into adulthood, impacting stress responses, emotional regulation, and overall mental health, making individuals more susceptible to anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
Psychotherapy techniques, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for trauma treatment, can be effectively applied in clinical practice to address trauma symptoms and foster self-regulation.
This course, in both live webinar and recorded versions, is designed to better equip clinicians to support adolescents and adults alike in managing trauma responses. Clinicians will deepen their competency to support patients in health care settings by reducing trauma-related symptoms and promoting resilience. This training combines CEU credit with best practices in trauma care to benefit both new and seasoned practitioners.
Attendees can join a live webinar format to engage with the material in real-time, or choose self-paced options for CEU credit with CE approvals to meet licensing requirements.
Course materials are only available to enrolled students.
