Overview:
Trauma doesn’t just live in the mind. It lives in the body — and stays there, even when clients feel safe, even when they understand what happened, even when they’ve talked about it for years. They still freeze. They still collapse. They still shut down.
This 6-hour Masterclass reveals the neuroscience behind why the body holds trauma and why clients get stuck in freeze, collapse, and shutdown responses. Learn what trauma does to the brain, the nervous system, and the body — and why traditional talk therapy often can’t reach it. Through Polyvagal Theory and the full autonomic stress response, you’ll understand the “why” behind what you see in session and gain the foundation for trauma processing that actually works.
Designed for licensed mental health professionals seeking to understand the biological basis of trauma and build the clinical foundation for effective EMDR and trauma treatment.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
Â
Evaluate the biological nature of trauma and how trauma can create physical and psychological symptoms.
Examine Porges’ Polyvagal Theory as it relates to clinical treatment of traumatized clients.
Differentiate between sympathetic (activated) freeze responses and the parasympathetic (deactivated) dorsal vagal immobilization response.
Identify distinguishing factors of the following types of traumatic stress: normal, prolonged, complex, and developmental.
Determine the clinical implications of traumatic stress symptomology, including hyperarousal, affect dysregulation, dissociation, body memories, and flashbacks.
