LGBTQ+ Trauma & Abuse Masterclass: Affirming Interventions for Identity, Healing & Recovery (RV)

Overview:

LGBTQ+ individuals face distinct and often intersecting risks when it comes to trauma, abuse, and help-seeking. Family rejection, intimate partner violence, and systemic discrimination don’t just cause harm — they compound it. And when survivors try to get help, they often encounter providers who don’t understand their experiences, or worse, cause additional harm.

This 6-hour training gives you the clinical tools to provide affirming, trauma-informed care for LGBTQ+ survivors. Learn to recognize the unique forms of trauma this population faces, understand how minority stress and identity-based harm shape trauma responses, and implement culturally competent interventions that support identity integration, relational healing, and long-term recovery. You’ll also learn to identify barriers that prevent LGBTQ+ clients from seeking help — and how to break them down in your practice.

Designed for licensed mental health professionals who want to provide competent, affirming care for LGBTQ+ trauma survivors without causing additional harm.

Objectives:

  1. Identify the forms of abuse and trauma commonly experienced by LGBTQ+ survivors, including family rejection, intimate partner violence, and discrimination.

  2. Analyze how trauma, systemic discrimination, inequitable healthcare, and legal barriers influence the mental health and interpersonal relationships of LGBTQ+ individuals.

  3. Recognize common barriers to help-seeking among LGBTQ+ survivors, including prior negative experiences with providers, stigma, and concerns related to safety, visibility, and legal vulnerability.

  4. Identify trauma responses shaped by minority stress and identity-based harm, and integrate this understanding into clinical conceptualization.

  5. Apply culturally competent strategies to address issues of identity, self-esteem, and safety for LGBTQ+ survivors.

  6. Implement trauma-informed, affirming interventions that support identity integration, relational healing, and long-term recovery for LGBTQ+ clients.
