Overview:
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a modern behavioral approach that targets psychological flexibility — the ability to stay open, aware, and engaged in meaningful action even in the presence of difficult thoughts and emotions.
This two-day training with Dr. DJ Moran introduces clinicians to the empirical foundations of ACT, emphasizing how human language can both amplify suffering and serve as a catalyst for purposeful behavioral change. Participants will learn how the six core flexibility processes — acceptance, defusion, present-moment contact, perspective-taking, values, and committed action — work together as a unified model for reducing rigidity and promoting vitality.
Through experiential exercises, case demonstrations, and structured assessment tools such as the Inflexahex and the Mindful Action Plan (MAP), attendees will gain practical skills for applying ACT across diagnoses, including anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, and substance use concerns. The workshop highlights ACT as an evidence-based, process-focused psychotherapy grounded in functional contextualism and real-world behavior change.
Objectives:
- Demonstrate effective use of the six core processes of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients advance psychological flexibility.
- Implement clinical techniques of defusion, acceptance applications, mindfulness, and values clarification, while integrating research-supported behavior therapy interventions to increase psychological flexibility in clients.
- Utilize acceptance approaches with avoidance problems to strengthen a client’s willingness for behavior change.
- Apply clinical skills of defusion to help the client effectively handle automatic cognitions.
- Utilize ACT exercises to aid clients in developing new skills to engage in the present moment through mindfulness practices and a mindful action plan.
- Assess and clarify a client’s values to contrive ways for motivating attainment of treatment plan objectives.
- Integrate ACT techniques into different therapeutic styles and methods as an approach to managing symptoms.
- Create committed action plans for clients with clinical concerns to improve the level of functioning.
- Describe use of metaphors to undermine language-based avoidance repertoires to improve client engagement.
- Utilize clinical strategies of committed action, contact with the present moment, defusion, acceptance, self-as-context, and values authorship to integrate ACT into an evidence-based therapy plan as it relates to treatment outcomes.
- Implement emotional, behavioral, willingness, and exposure techniques with clients to reduce experiential avoidance.
- Implement exposure techniques to reduce experiential avoidance, and have an effect on accepting emotions, distancing from cognitions, and committing to clinically-relevant improvements.
- Apply ACT techniques to the treatment of depression, anxiety, and trauma.
