Children’s ADHD & Autism Masterclass: Recognizing the Overlapping Profile & Sequencing Evidence-Based Care (RV)

Overview:

For years, autism and ADHD were treated as mutually exclusive diagnoses in children. The evidence has changed that dramatically — the two profiles co-occur far more often than not, and when they overlap, they bring a web of additional presentations with them: developmental coordination disorder, dyslexia, anxiety, sensory processing differences, and executive function challenges. Clinicians assessing and treating these children need a framework that recognizes the overlapping profile, understands the shared subcortical and cerebellar mechanisms behind it, and sequences intervention correctly.

This 6-hour training teaches clinicians how to identify AuADHD — the co-occurrence of autism and ADHD in a single child — and understand why the two profiles were historically treated in isolation despite their frequent overlap. Explore the shared biological, sensorimotor, and cognitive mechanisms that link autism, ADHD, developmental coordination disorder, anxiety, and dyslexia. Learn how to conduct evidence-based diagnosis that sequences biological and sensorimotor evaluation ahead of behavioral intervention, and how to distinguish pathological demand avoidance from oppositional behavior. Understand nutritional, metabolic, mitochondrial, and gastrointestinal contributors to autism, and learn when to assess versus when to refer.

Practical intervention strategies are presented throughout — including declarative language to lower demand and support processing, biomedical foundations, sensorimotor and rhythm-based approaches, executive function coaching, and regulation frameworks. The training also introduces treatment modalities beyond behavior-first pathways, giving clinicians a broader referral network and clearer criteria for evaluating emerging interventions.

Designed for licensed mental health professionals, educators, and clinicians who work with children and adolescents presenting with overlapping neurodevelopmental profiles.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Define AuADHD and describe how autistic and ADHD traits co-occur and interact in children and adolescents.
  2. Explain the high rates of co-occurrence among autism, ADHD, developmental coordination disorder, anxiety, and dyslexia, and the shared subcortical and cerebellar mechanisms that link them.
  3. Describe the biological contributors to autism, including nutritional, metabolic, mitochondrial, and gastrointestinal factors.
  4. Apply an evidence-based diagnostic process that sequences biological and sensorimotor evaluation ahead of behavioral intervention.
  5. Distinguish pathological demand avoidance from oppositional behavior and select responsive strategies.
  6. Use declarative language to lower demand, support processing, and build connection.
  7. Reference treatment options across biomedical, sensorimotor, cognitive, and emerging modalities, including approaches outside the presenter’s own practice.

Scope and Limitations Disclosure
