Compassion Fatigue Recovery Masterclass: Strategies for Burnout, Vicarious Trauma & Sustainable Practice (RV)

Overview:

Helping professionals routinely bear witness to suffering, injustice, and trauma. Over time, this exposure can lead to burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma — conditions that impact not only personal well-being but also clinical judgment, ethical practice, and the sustainability of one’s work.

This 6-hour training provides a trauma-informed, strengths-based framework for understanding and responding to the cumulative effects of caregiving through the lens of trauma stewardship. Learn to distinguish between burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma, recognize the 16 signs of trauma exposure response, and identify personal, relational, and systemic vulnerabilities. Gain practical strategies for prevention, early identification, and recovery — including the Trauma Stewardship Five Directions — to support sustainable, ethical practice without sacrificing yourself.

Designed for clinicians, social workers, healthcare providers, educators, advocates, first responders, and others engaged in emotionally demanding helping roles seeking sustainable, ethical ways to continue their work long-term.

Objectives:

  1. Distinguish burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma, including key differences, overlaps, and common signs and symptoms.
  2. Recognize trauma exposure responses in themselves and others using the trauma stewardship framework, including the 16 signs of burnout.
  3. Identify personal, relational, and systemic vulnerabilities that increase risk for burnout and compassion fatigue in helping roles.
  4. Apply the Trauma Stewardship Five Directions to support awareness, balance, and ethical, sustainable practice.
  5. Implement practical trauma stewardship strategies to prevent, respond to, and recover from burnout and vicarious trauma.
  6. Create a brief, personalized trauma stewardship plan to support long-term well-being and professional sustainability.
