Overview:
This webinar explores the dynamics of manipulative and abusive behaviors in relationships, with a focus on identifying psychological tactics such as gaslighting, emotional abuse, and social isolation. Participants will gain an understanding of how these behaviors impact survivors—often resulting in trauma bonding, complex trauma, and posttraumatic stress symptoms.
The training will also highlight clinical strategies for working with individuals who have experienced these forms of abuse. Participants will learn how to integrate trauma-informed care, develop safety plans, and apply empowerment-focused interventions to support recovery and emotional resilience. Emphasis will be placed on recognizing patterns of psychological manipulation and offering practical tools for client support and healing.

- Identify common tactics used by manipulative and abusive individuals in relationships.
- Describe the impact of manipulative and abusive behaviors on victims.
- Apply evidence-based strategies for working with individuals who have experienced manipulative and abusive relationships.
- Develop a safety plan for individuals impacted by manipulative and abusive relationships.
- Utilize trauma-informed care principles when working with individuals impacted by manipulative and abusive relationships.
This recorded webinar is delivered through lecture and using clinical examples. Instruction integrates theory, trauma-informed care principles, and practical tools such as DBT and CBT strategies, safety planning templates, and coping models.
Limitations:
While this course presents evidence-based strategies for addressing psychological abuse and gaslighting, it is important to note that some terminology such as trauma bonding and gaslighting, may lack consistent diagnostic definitions across clinical literature. Additionally, research into the long-term psychological impact of manipulative relationships is ongoing, and clinicians should remain aware of cultural, contextual, and individual differences in how abuse is experienced and reported.

Ellen Biros is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and adjunct professor. With over 20 years of experience in social work, Ellen is a seasoned expert in the treatment and assessment of individuals with personality disorders, substance abuse issues, and emotional regulation problems. Ellen earned a Master’s degree in Justice from American University in Washington, DC, and a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Georgia. She has been sharing her knowledge with students at Tulane University in the School of Social Work and The University of Phoenix in the College of Social Services and the College of Natural Sciences. She is known for her dynamic and engaging teaching style and her ability to inspire students to achieve their full potential. Ellen is also an accomplished author and speaker. She has authored several continuing education seminars that have been well-received by professionals in the field.
