Normative and Prolonged Grief Disorder Webinar: Proven and Effective Interventions to Help Clients Process Grief and Loss (RV)

Overview:

Mental health and healthcare professionals frequently encounter grief that is misunderstood, pathologized, or misdiagnosed. This six-hour training provides current, research-based guidance for distinguishing normative grief from Prolonged Grief Disorder and related conditions. Participants will examine death and non-death losses, contemporary grief models, culturally responsive assessment, differential diagnosis, and focused screening for PGD and suicide risk. A meaning-making approach will connect assessment and case conceptualization to treatment planning. Through case material, reflection, and practical exercises, participants will learn at least five core grief-focused interventions addressing narrative disruption, uncertainty, guilt, coping flexibility, continuing bonds, and ritual, leaving with skills they can immediately apply with grieving individuals and families.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Differentiate normative grief, integrated grief, and Prolonged Grief Disorder using clinical presentation, duration, functional impairment, and context.

  2. Distinguish sudden and traumatic loss, ambiguous and non-finite loss, disenfranchised loss, and other death and non-death losses that influence assessment and treatment.

  3. Compare stage-based assumptions with contemporary grief models, including meaning reconstruction, continuing bonds, and the Dual Process Model, for use in case conceptualization.

  4. Apply DSM-5-TR criteria and differential-diagnostic reasoning to distinguish Prolonged Grief Disorder from major depressive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and adjustment disorder.

  5. Develop a grief-informed case conceptualization and sequenced treatment plan using assessment findings, risk and protective factors, cultural and spiritual context, and current functioning.

  6. Apply at least five core grief-focused interventions that address meaning disruption, uncertainty, maladaptive guilt, coping flexibility, continuing bonds, and ritual.

Scope and Limitations Disclosure

This training is intended for licensed mental health and healthcare professionals who assess or treat grief, including Prolonged Grief Disorder and related death and non-death losses. The content is educational in nature and does not constitute clinical supervision, medical advice, or a substitute for individualized case consultation, and it does not replace comprehensive suicide risk assessment protocols or crisis intervention training when working with grieving clients at risk. All assessment approaches, case conceptualization frameworks, and interventions discussed should be applied within each participant’s scope of practice, licensure, and applicable jurisdictional regulations, with recognition that diagnostic criteria for Prolonged Grief Disorder and its differentiation from major depressive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and adjustment disorder reflect an evolving area of the DSM-5-TR that warrants ongoing clinical attention. Participants should remain attentive to cultural and spiritual context in grief presentations and should practice in accordance with their profession’s ethical guidelines, mandated reporting obligations, and jurisdiction-specific standards of care, particularly with respect to screening for and responding to suicide risk.
