1:00 PM ET – 4:15 PM ET
Overview:
When a client stands to benefit from more than one evidence-based approach, why place them in a box? Once you master the interplay between motivational interviewing, dialectical behavioral therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy, you are equipped with a much more comprehensive and adaptable framework that can be applied to a broad audience.
This course will analyze each of these powerful approaches, both individually and as a combination, to open up new avenues for mental health professionals. Built into the course is a heavy emphasis on process-informed adaptability, allowing mental health care providers to competently adjust the approach according to the client’s response.
This course builds upon the foundations of motivational interviewing, cognitive behavior therapies, and dialectical behavioral therapy to craft a powerful and highly individualized approach to a wide variety of clients. Participants who have not yet been formally trained on these models as well as those who have will enrich their understanding of this hybridized approach through real-world scenarios, sample applications, comparison exercises, and more.
Objectives:
- Identify and describe several key similarities and differences between motivational interviewing (MI), cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) approaches.
- Explain the six stages of the change model, as well as its objectives and applications.
- Analyze the similarities, differences, and applicability of MI, CBT, and DBT approaches to enhance the participant’s understanding of how and when to use strategies from each approach.
- Describe where CBT methodology can be found within MI, and when (as well as how) this can be most effectively emphasized in clinical scenarios.
- Identify at least five CBT and DBT interventions that stimulate wanted behavioral changes during the action stage of treatment.
- Discuss the applicability of MI strategies within CBT and DBT frameworks.
- Create a case scenario demonstrating effective use and integration of MI and CBT methodologies.Â
Course materials are only available to enrolled students.
