Who Needs to Pass the NCMHCE Exam?

Here’s who typically needs to pass the NCMHCE licensing exam:

  1. LMHC (Licensed Mental Health Counselor): In many states, LMHC candidates are required to pass the NCMHCE to earn licensure. Some states may require the NCE (National Counselor Examination) instead, but the NCMHCE focuses more on clinical skills, which is why it is often preferred for mental health counseling licenses.
  2. LPCC (Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor): Similar to LMHCs, many states require LPCC candidates to pass the NCMHCE for licensure, especially in states that emphasize clinical mental health counseling.
  3. Other mental health professionals: Some states may require the NCMHCE for additional licenses, like LCPC (Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor) or other similar designations. The exam is focused on clinical skills, making it a good fit for professionals in clinical settings.

Professionals aiming for more general counseling credentials like the NCC or those just passing the NCE may not need to take the NCMHCE, depending on state requirements. However, the NCMHCE is critical for those focused on clinical mental health practice.

Be sure to check your specific state’s requirements, as licensure laws vary.

Course materials are only available to enrolled students.
