Overview:
Panic disorder is one of the most treatable anxiety presentations in the DSM — and one of the most commonly mistreated. Well-meaning clinicians reach for relaxation and reassurance when the research calls for exposure. They help clients calm down when the real work is teaching them to stay engaged while afraid. The result is clients who cycle through years of therapy without meaningful improvement, and clinicians who feel stuck treating what should be a highly responsive condition.
This 6-hour training provides a complete, clinically grounded roadmap for treating panic from the first psychoeducation session through relapse prevention. Learn to conceptualize panic through the interplay of physiological arousal, catastrophic cognition, and avoidance; distinguish panic attacks that occur as part of another anxiety disorder from panic disorder and agoraphobia; and confidently implement the intervention that changes everything: interoceptive exposure. Grounded in CBT and ACT, this training gives clinicians a coherent treatment model that holds up under real clinical pressure — not just techniques to try, but a framework for why they work and when to use them.
Across six hours of live demonstration, hands-on practice, and clinical troubleshooting, you’ll walk away with the specific tools to run an interoceptive assessment, build an exposure hierarchy, navigate medication conversations with prescribers, and handle the moments that make panic treatment hard in practice — the client who won’t stop taking Xanax before session, the family accommodating every avoidance, the panic attack that erupts mid-session. You’ll leave with a session-by-session framework, practical scripts for talking to clients about their symptoms, and the clinical confidence to treat panic disorder as the highly responsive condition it actually is.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

Identify the key physiological, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral components of panic attacks.

Distinguish between panic attacks and panic disorder, including presentations involving agoraphobia.

Implement interoceptive exposure as a treatment strategy for panic disorder.

Describe how cognitive restructuring, relaxation, and mindfulness strategies can be incorporated into evidence-based treatment for panic disorder.

Explain the role of pharmacological treatment in panic disorder, including indications, limitations, and the clinician’s role in medication conversations.

Apply clinical strategies to address common barriers to effective panic treatment, including non-adherence, low motivation, and family accommodation.

Participants should practice in accordance with their profession’s ethical guidelines and jurisdiction-specific standards of care, including appropriate risk assessment when panic symptoms occur alongside other clinical concerns.

Dr. Ashley Smith
Dr. Ashley Smith earned her PhD in clinical psychology with an emphasis in children and families in 2007. She completed a predoctoral internship at Children’s Mercy Hospital before joining the staff at Omaha Children’s Hospital to help develop their dedicated anxiety services. In 2009, She relocated to Kansas City to serve as a senior staff psychologist at a nationally recognized anxiety specialty center. She ventured out on her own in 2017 and continues her private practice, where she is a sought-after anxiety specialist. In addition to direct clinical work, she is actively involved in a number of other scholarly activities. She has been an adjunct assistant professor and has provided supervision and consultation for students and other professionals. She has several publications, including peer-reviewed journal articles, chapters in edited volumes, blog posts and online articles, and a book, Childhood Anxiety Disorders. She is a long-time member of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America and recently received their Special Recognition Award for her public outreach efforts. Dr. Ashley regularly presents workshops and trainings on local and national levels. She is passionate about sharing cognitive behavioral therapy, positive psychology practices, and applied neuroscience to help people struggling with anxiety live better lives; this passion has driven efforts to help more people in novel ways, ultimately leading to the creation of Peak Mind: The Center for Psychological Strength, which she co-founded in 2019.
