Dr. Rhonda Sutton
Dr. Rhonda Sutton works to help counselors learn a new, effective way of conceptualizing their counseling sessions through the “STEP Notes” method. Dr. Sutton is a licensed professional counselor and counselor supervisor with over 25 years of experience. She has owned a private practice in North Carolina, worked in a variety of mental health settings (such as an employee assistance program and a mental health hospital), and has served as a teaching assistant professor in the Counselor Education Program at North Carolina State University for over 16 years. Dr. Sutton earned both her M.Ed.
and her Ph.D. in Counselor Education from North Carolina State University. Given her work supervising those seeking licensure as counselors, she realized that a structured format for how to take progress notes would be beneficial.
Dr. Sutton developed the “STEP Notes” method which is featured in the book, “The Counselor’s STEPs for Progress Notes.” In addition to explaining the “STEP Notes” way of taking progress notes, this book includes additional case studies, a glossary of clinical terms, a list of clinical abbreviations/symbols, and examples of other documentation mental health professionals use in their daily practice with clients (i.e., treatment plans, termination letters, statement of privacy practices, etc.).
