Overview:
This webinar will explore the commonalities and differences between motivational interviewing, dialectical behavioral therapy, and cognitive behavior therapy.
In this presentation, Dr. Kristin Dempsey will help participants learn when it is strategically best to use each approach and how using the skills found in each approach can help move sessions forward. Most importantly, we will discuss and practice taking a process-informed approach in which we will learn how paying attention to the impact of interventions can help inform our next best move.
This course is useful for clinicians who have received basic training in motivational interviews, cognitive behavior therapies, and/or dialectical behavior therapy, as they can learn how to leverage each intervention for the best outcome. Providers new to these concepts will also have an opportunity to learn about each through comparison and sample application, helping to inspire curiosity about learning more about each intervention and how they can work well together.
Objectives:
- Describe at least three commonalities and three differences between the motivational interviewing (MI), cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) approaches.
- Describe the six stages of the change model and provide at least two examples of when MI should be used vs. when CBT or DBT is the best intervention.
- Identify what components of MI contain elements of CBT intervention and when such interventions are best applied in session.
- List five to seven CBT and BT interventions that help promote change during the action stage of treatment.
- Assess when motivational interviewing techniques might be useful interventions in two situations when providing CBT or DBT treatment.
- Construct a beginning case formulation using MI and CBT integration examples.
Limitations:
This course provides an introductory-to-intermediate overview of integrating Motivational Interviewing (MI) with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques. While the program references empirically supported models, it does not provide full training or certification in MI, DBT, or CBT. Clinicians are encouraged to seek advanced training and supervision before implementing these models in clinical practice.
