12:00 PM ET – 3:15 PM ET
Overview:
LGBTQ individuals face unique risks and challenges when experiencing trauma and abuse, including family rejection and abuse, intimate partner violence, and societal discrimination. These experiences can result in significant mental health concerns, struggles with identity and self-esteem, and relational difficulties. Due to their identity, many survivors of family and relationship abuse face barriers to accessing appropriate care and resources.
This 3-hour training provides clinicians with an overview of many of the common experiences of abuse and trauma for Queer/LGBTQ survivors, and explores how discrimination in healthcare systems, social environments, and legal frameworks compounds these traumatic experiences. Participants will learn culturally competent and inclusive strategies to support the mental health, identity, and safety of LGBTQ clients, aiding survivors in their healing and recovery process.
Objectives:
- Identify the forms of abuse and trauma commonly experienced by LGBTQ survivors, including family rejection and abuse, intimate partner violence, and discrimination.
- Analyze how trauma, systemic discrimination, inequitable healthcare, and legal barriers influence the mental health and interpersonal relationships of LGBTQ individuals.
- Apply culturally competent strategies to address issues of identity, self-esteem, and safety for LGBTQ survivors.
